A staple of every backpacker and a must if you plan on venturing into shared hostel bathrooms, flip flops are usually among the top five items on any packing list for travelers. Besides the comfort they provide, they are extremely practical and work well in most situations.

For Kyle Berner, he yearned for a lifestyle that involved wearing flip flops every single day. Seeing his background in Marketing eventually leading up to a life trapped inside a cubicle, Kyle quit the rat race and moved to Thailand for a year where he wore flip flops to his heart’s content.

The concept of Feelgoodz™ was hatched when Kyle went perusing local Thai markets for a new pair of slippers and discovered that Thailand was and still is the world’s leading exporter of rubber.

Kyle’s “flops” are made from rubber harvested from tropical Yang Para trees, and they come in a variety of earthy themes: night, twilight, woods, earth, moon, clay, and cumulus. There’s also a pink Ladyslipper for (you guessed it) ladies, and a limelight slipper with a dash of lime green color. The slippers are made from 100% eco-friendly natural latex rubber and natural, non-toxic dyes.

What sets Feelgoodz™ apart is its commitment to giving back through its triple bottom-line donation model:

Feelgoodz has created a unique partnership Ashoka. Feelgoodz will use sales of our flip-flops to support Ashoka Fellows globally. We will start in Thailand, and our areas of focus are Environmentalism (Planet), Fair Trade (People), and Community Development/Micro-Finance (Phitsanulok, Thailand). See our triple bottom-line donation model below:

   1. 1% for the Planet
2. 1% for the People
3. 1% for Phitsanulok (Thailand)

This means 3% of all its revenues goes to fair trade organizations, environmental organizations, and micro-lending institutions such as Kiva.

As Kyle would say, “Mai Pehn Rai”, which means “take it easy” in Thai; a philosophy the folks at Feelgoodz™ has adopted for building a “better business and healthier lifestyle”.

Price: $19.99 | BUY

Fair trade companies make a wealth of goods that are practical for travel while sustaining communities through much-needed income and safe workplaces. Make sure your items are fair trade certified by checking the shopping database at Fair Trade Federation or grab one of the great products below.

Stack the odds in favor of a good time in the snow—for you and the kids. Start with the right gear.

[Editor's Note: This post was sponsored by REI. At Matador we seek sponsorship only with companies we believe in 100%, and REI is a perfect example. Please click here to see some of our other sponsors and partners.]

Packing for a family ski and snowboard vacation can make the logistics behind Scott’s expedition to the South Pole seem like an easy (and cheap) midsummer outing to the county fair. One ill-equipped team member—one small dose of cold and wet—and the whole journey can end up derailed. But with the right investment in proper outfitting, kids and adults alike can get out and focus on the deep thrills to be had in the wide world of ice crystals and gravity.

1. Proper Long Underwear and Ski Socks

The base layer will make or break the whole adventure. Don’t cut corners and think you’ll get away with those old school waffled-cotton long johns from the big box store. Or last night’s pj’s. Kids warm up fast doing what they do outdoors, especially in the snow. Then they sweat. And when cotton gets wet, the next step is cold. Then it’s game over.

Take advantage of the latest advancements in high-tech underclothing with a light- to mid-weight Capilene 3 ensemble from Patagonia. Expedition-weight is good for lounging around in a snow cave, but where any amount of movement is involved, lighter is better.

For the sake of pit-stop efficiency, opt for two pieces (separate tops and bottoms) over the one piece union-suit style. Crew neck or Zip-T is a matter of preference. I like the Zip-T. On really cold days add a Turtle Fur neck gaiter for extra roast.

For reduced stink factor and a more organic feel, spend the extra bills on SmartWool’s ultra-cozy (and durable) merino long johns.

SmartWool also makes some of the best and best-looking socks on the market, socks that wick moisture away from feet and actually keep from slumping and lumping in boots. Again, go light- to mid-weight (a bit of air around the toes is a good insulator). And don’t buy into any old-wives’ hype about two pairs of socks being warmer—it ain’t so.

Extra tip: To avoid uncomfortable shin bruises (that can take all season to heal), don’t stuff long underwear bottoms down into boots. Instead, roll the cuffs up to above the top of the ski boot, but still long enough for sock tops to overlap—or just grab a pair of scissors and cut the cuffs off entirely.

2. Two-piece Outerwear—waterproof and breathable

One-piece snow suits may be required costume for backcountry snowmobiling and ice fishing. But you wouldn’t be caught dead in one anywhere near a lift line, right? So why put your kids in one? Plus, anyone who’s ever gone three rounds with a toddler on the wet floor of a ski-lodge bathroom knows that one-piece suits aren’t meant for access to the interior.

Bibs are pretty much flawless for staying on, for keeping deep snow out, and are also generally more breathable than a one-piece. But still, the jacket has to come off before the pants go down.

Best bet is a good jacket-and-pants combo of high-quality coated nylon (waterproof and breathable). Jacket should hang well below the hips, without a cuff at the waist. And with a real hood. Like this or this or this.

The best pants—like these (insulated for super cold days) or these (not insulated and thus better for high-energy activity)—have sewn-in elastic gaiters to keep snow out of boots, and reinforced cuffs.

3. Snowboots

Forget fur. Forget suede. Forget laces. Go with something seriously waterproof, something you can pull on and off easily, with a Velcro strap for cinching it to the ankle and a drawstring over the calf. And good treads. And liners you can pull out and leave by the fire to dry.

A basic pair of Sorels and you’re good to go for sledding, building snow shelters, digging out the family wagon, or walking to town.

4. Hat

The best way to convince kids to wear hats is to give them a good selection and have them pick out their own.

5. Waterproof Mittens

Gloves are impossible to put on. Plus they aren’t as warm. Most kids under 12 don’t ski with poles these days, so they don’t need the dexterity.

The vertical rip-and-stick closure option is a good one for the smallest hands. For bigger kids, given the high (and ongoing) loss potential, you’re probably fine with these over these (at more than twice the price).

Hand warmers? Other than the not-so-green disposable aspect… why not! Always good to have a secret weapon when the wind starts gusting.

6. Helmet & Goggles

A must. With matching (or contrasting) goggles in pink or black. For the sunniest of spring days, when the snow corns up and the eaves start dripping, hook em up with a stylish pair of Julbos.

7. Skis, Boots, Bindings, etc.

You’ll have to do the complex math to see if it’s worth investing the $300+ it’ll cost to purchase a full kid’s ski or snowboard package to haul around with you (and then store in the garage, only to eventually sell it on eBay for 10 cents on the dollar), versus $20/day on the hill for rental gear. Variables: expected number of ski days, child’s growth rate, potential hand-me-down value for younger siblings.

Advantages to renting: don’t sweat the growth spurts, the long haul to the car, equipment malfunctions, or rocks. Advantages to buying: skip the lines and hassle at the rental shop, don’t sweat short days, enjoy the street cred.

Before you decide, be sure to check out REI’s very cool Kids’/Junior Snowsports Equipment Trade-In program. You bring your gently-used kids’ or junior ski or snowboard gear to an REI store and trade it in for 20% off the purchase of new kids’ or junior snowsports gear. Not bad, eh? Only available in store, and only for members (and hey, it’s only $20 to join).

8. Ski Trainer Harness

For most kids the only real hard part is stopping. Which is where you come in. This will help you steer your little daredevil down the slopes safely, away from trees and other skiers, and help them stop short of the parking lot.

Add an edgy-wedgy to your arsenal to force the snowplow and keep tips from crossing.

9. Ski Hydration Pack

Keep the crew well-hydrated at altitude with a CamelBak Hydration Ski Pack. The insulated drinking system keeps the plumbing from freezing on those good, cold powder days. And there’s plenty of extra space for snacks and sunscreen and loose gear. Also available in mommy style.

10. Car Roof Rack

A lockable <a href="http://www.rei.com/product/784506 >Yakima Sky Box or Thule Roof Box makes it easy to load, unload and store a whole mess of gear, plus skis and poles too.

Extra: Entertainment for the Road

On the drive up, get the little ones in the mood with a timeless classic: Curious George in the Snow. Then ramp it up for all ages with the collector’s edition DVD of Warren Miller’s Children of Winter. Ready, set, have a blast!

There are two things I never travel without. One is a journal in which to record my thoughts while away from home. The other is a scarf.

A scarf is a great multi-purpose item for when you’re trying to pack light. Here’s why.

Fashion

No doubt your clothing will not see a washing machine and iron very often on the road. A scarf can help spruce up a suffering wardrobe.

Sleeping Sheet

Lay a scarf on your bed to cover those questionable looking stains on guest house sheets. It won’t help with the bed bugs though.

Picnic Blanket/ Beach Towel

Unless you’re planning to stay at The Four Seasons in every country you visit where they supply luxurious lounge chairs, you’ll appreciate packing something to relax on.

Temperature Control

A scarf in a lightweight material like linen or cotton can actually help you stay cool in warmer climates. And, of course, you can wear it as a shawl to stay warm when the temperature drops.

Perfect for chilly nights around the campfire.

Modesty

Donning a scarf instantly makes your attire more appropriate and can be especially useful if you plan on visiting religious sites. Wat Pho, home of the reclining Buddha in Bangkok, even keeps scarves on hand to lend to visitors to the temple.

Bag

Buy more at the market than will fit into your backpack? Place your treasures in the middle of a scarf and tie up the corners for a makeshift bag.

Culture

Many cultures have a distinctive scarf or sarong that epitomizes local style (think of a kanga in Tanzania or kroma in Cambodia). Pick up your own to blend in with the locals or bring one to your home-stay family as a gift.

Towel

It may not be as absorbent as your mini Quick Dry towel, but in a pinch, you can use a scarf to dry off after a shower. And it will really come in handy after that impromptu skinny dip in the Gulf of Thailand.

Camouflage

Although it may make you feel like a tourist instead of a traveler, wearing a camera around your neck is convenient. Draping a scarf around your neck conceals a camera hanging there.

Breathe Easy

Tie a scarf around your mouth and nose to keep yourself from inhaling dust and vehicle exhaust on those bumpy rides on dirt roads.

Bonus points for looking like a bandit from the Wild West.

Photo by six million dollar dan

I consider myself a minimalistic traveler.

Going through airport security, however, remains a juggling act: The hurried attempt to remove my shoes and jacket, cram my boarding pass and driver’s license into my back pocket, push my luggage through the scanner, and make it through the other side without holding up the line.

I become more frazzled if I’m bringing along my laptop which needs a separate bin through the scanner. When I finally collect my belongings, I scurry to a nearby bench to put myself back together.

Now there’s a product making part of this process more convenient.

In 2008, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began a new program allowing “checkpoint friendly” bags to be screened with the laptop still inside. Skooba Design has a colorful series of these laptop sleeves, manufactured so that the bag doesn’t impede the view of the computer in a scanner.

These nifty sleeves come in an array of colors (from brown corduroy to blue microsuede) and materials. There are three sizes available – Skooba Skin 1012 (small), Skooba Skin 1415 (medium) or Skooba Skin 1617 (large).

A “micro size” for smaller laptops was available but has now been discontinued and is currently on sale.

These lightweight laptop skins have handles that can be flipped out of the bag for use as a carrying case, or left inside for use as a plain sleeve.

Prices range from $29.95 to $39.95 depending on the size of the bag. Sales of overstocked or discontinued sleeves are usually available on Skooba Design’s website.

Skooba also makes a nifty checkpoint friendly briefcase and messenger bag, which are more expensive, but, depending on your needs, may be more useful than the laptop sleeves.

While these bags may save you the trouble of having to remove your laptop at airport security, you’ll still have to take out any accessories that may be in the bag, such as a power cord and external hard drives.

The Fine Print

While Skooba can’t say their products are officially approved, authorized, or endorsed by TSA, the bags do meet the technical requirements for scanning. Skooba also warns that while the bags comply with TSA’s rules, human errors in packing or security situations may make it necessary for the laptop to be removed after all.

Backpacking and semi-roughing it in hostels doesn’t mean your daily grooming routine should go down the drain. Here are a few travel-sized items guaranteed to help you maintain your debonair style while on the road.

Tie Caddy

Unpacking your neckties from your backpack only to find them wrinkled can be irritating.

Say No! to wrinkled ties with the Tie Caddy, a plastic cylinder for storing rolled up ties.

With its transparent design, you can easily spot the tie you’d like to wear out without unloading your entire backpack.

Inflatable Hangers

Face it, finding hangers for your suits in hostels can be a drag.

Why not bring your own lightweight, inflatable hangers? Made from durable vinyl, its backflow valve technology allows you to easily inflate the hangers when needed, and quickly deflate them.

Now you can have a fresh pair of socks everyday with this handy travel laundry kit.

You have your passport, you have your toothbrush, What other things are essential for any overseas trip?

You have your passport, you have your toothbrush, What other things are essential for any overseas trip?

This isn’t a list of the most essential accessories for overseas travel. You’re going to need a passport, money, a toothbrush, a suitable bag and a towel, but you already knew that, right? The accessories that we explore in detail below are all essential in that they will save you time, money and effort and will generally make your overseas trip a far more pleasurable experience.

1. Travel Journal

Photo: kikijames

As any seasoned traveller will no doubt tell you, a notebook is as essential as a clean pair of undies when you’re abroad. Any old jotter will do, but if you’re willing to splash the cash, you can’t do much better than a leather journal.

Italian and oilcloth covered, Moleskine were the favoured notebooks of Picasso, Matisse, Kurakin and Hemingway, and you can’t argue with the weight of that collective opinion. Oh yeah, don’t forget to bring a pen too!

2. Netbook

A netbook is a small, lightweight, portable laptop that can do almost anything a larger notebook can. Cheaper than their larger cousins, netbooks are particularly suited to web browsing and emailing.

The MSI WIND U100 is among the best on the market. Weighing in at just 4.4lb and measuring 12.3 x 8.7 x 3.4, it has an ample 120GB of memory, an Intel Atom N270 processor, Windows XP Home and an in-built high-resolution web cam, all for just $330. Perfect for staying in contact with friends and family via email, IM and Skype while you’re on the road.

3. 3G Mobile Internet Dongle

A small, inconspicuous 3G mobile internet dongle can be a lifesaver when there’s no wifi signal or internet cafe within range, and let’s face it, that’s usually the case. Although the connection speed might not be up to your usual standard, 3G coverage is very good across huge swathes of the globe.

Most cell phone operators sell 3G dongles these days, and they’re all very reasonably priced. Some are sold on a pay-as-you-go basis, while others are tied to a monthly charge and a download limit (typically 15GB per month).

You’ll just need to be wary about using data roaming on a frequent basis (especially if you are on a monthly contract) as the minutes and megabytes quickly stack up and many people have come home to staggeringly large bills.

4. Digital Camera

Photo: Panasonic

</div

Every great trip deserves to be documented for posterity, gloating and/or boring your friends at home. Digital cameras are cheaper than ever and you can buy a very decent one online for under $200. Choose a camera that's lightweight, pocket-sized and able to take a bit of a battering.

Any of the smaller cameras from the Panasonic Lumix range will be ideal: they all come with a top-quality Leica lens and an Intelligent Auto function to guarantee great pics.

5. USB Flash Drive

A USB flash drive is essential for backing-up and storing the hundreds of photographs that you’ll no doubt be taking on your travels. You can also store music, videos, maps, documents and any other files which might be of use. With a flash drive you can easily share files with the people that you meet abroad and, more importantly, steal music from them.

6. International Cell Phone

For social and emergency reasons, a cell phone is an essential item to pack, but do not make the mistake of taking your phone away without first checking with your network operator that it can be used overseas. Your phone itself must be capable of operating on various radio frequencies (most modern phones are) and your network operator must have established a roaming agreement with an operator abroad.

Some network operators insist that you contact them before travelling to ’set up’ roaming capability. This is an ideal time to enquire about roaming charges, which can often be extortionate. If you’re going to be away for a while, it might make economic sense to buy a local pay-as-you-go handset or switch operator completely.

In the UK, Vodafone, for example, has abolished roaming charges in over 35 countries. If that’s not an option then you might want to try out an international cell phone rental whereby you get reduced international rates on calls and data.

7. Voltaic Solar Charger Bag

Photo: Voltaic

Handheld solar chargers are widely available for as little as $20. They generate free and renewable electricity from sunlight, which can then be used to charge any electronic device that you’ve brought with you. They contain in-built batteries, which store generated power for use whenever you want – perfect when you’re miles away from a plug socket.

The ultimate portable solar charger is the Voltaic Solar Bag, a rucksack covered in lightweight, waterproof solar panels. Larger bags can fully charge a laptop from one full day of sunlight, while smaller bags can power an MP3 player for three hours from just one hour of sun.

8. Hammacher Schlemmer Auto-Detecting Travel Adaptor And Converter

Assuming you can’t power everything with your solar charger alone, you’re going to need a travel adaptor for all your lovely electronic devices to work. Look no further than the 150-Country Auto-Detecting Travel Adaptor and Converter, the definitive travel adaptor by Hammacher Schlemmer. This beast of a gadget can charge two devices at once and can be used in over 150 countries. It even has an in-built USB port for charging small iPods and other USB-only devices.

9. LED Torch

Whether you’re camping out in the Amazon basin, backpacking ’round Thailand or five-starring it in San Tropez, an LED torch is an absolutely essential item to take with you. Modern LED torches are not only small and lightweight, they are super-bright and go on shining for hundreds of thousands of hours. They are really cheap, too: a good one will cost you under $10.

10. Swiss Army Knife

The Swiss Army knife has been an essential travel tool ever since the first one was made in 1897. There’s nothing quite as handy for chopping food, mending a broken suitcase and opening an ice-cold bottle of beer. The Wenger Giant Swiss Army knife has 87 implements and 141 functions, but at $1,400 and 2 pounds in weight, it might not be the most suitable for road warriors. The most basic of Swiss Army knives will do, but remember not to pack it in your hand luggage if you are flying anywhere.

A day out in Paris can be just as exhausting as a few hours hiking through the Pyrenees. Here are eight items to bring on your day out in a foreign city.

1. Tissue

A lack of toilet paper is common in most public restrooms, in some countries more than others. (I’m looking at you, Korea!)

Keep a small pack of tissue in your bag just to be safe.

A quick word of advice for the ladies: Girls, practice your squats now. Western toilets aren’t that common everywhere, and there are plenty of urban places where the word “toilet” still means “hole in the ground”.

2. Money Belt

Pickpocketing is common in any area with crowds, from subways and buses to all major tourist attractions. There’s a variety of money belts out there, from the bulky belts that hold your passport, cards, and the kitchen sink, to the unnoticeable that work great for a few bills.

Don’t confuse these with fanny packs, which scream “tourist”; money belts are to be worn under your clothes, with the zipper flat against your body.

If you’re really adverse to the money belt, at least consider keeping a little cash in your shoe. That way, in the worst-case scenario, you won’t be stuck somewhere without a way to pay for a cab.

3. Reusable Shopping Bags

A good reusable shopping bag folds into its own little pouch to slip in your pocket or purse, but holds tons of stuff when you pull it out.

Check out these ACME bags, made from unrippable nylon material, for less than $6.

I have two, and I’m always surprised at how much they hold, from a few days worth of clothes to a pineapple spending spree at a Brazilian market.

Save yourself all the plastic and paper shopping bags with one of these.

They’re also great for a day at the beach, picnics, or emergency situations when your shampoo bottle starts leaking in your suitcase. (The material is super easy to wash.)

4. Water Bottle

I’m a water bottle addict, but I always feel guilty going through so much plastic. For a day out, bring along a reusable bottle that you can fill up at fountains and in cafes.

If the local water is a little sour or you’re picky about drinking filtered water, try this BPA-free bottle from New Wave. It looks like a regular plastic bottle, but with a built-in filter that you can remove to use in other bottles.

Most reviews say the bottle doesn’t last longer than a few months, but for $8, you’ll surely get your money’s worth. Just make sure not to leave it in a hot car; several users have reported finding a plastic blob in the backseat after a few hours.

5. Pocket Flashlight

Forget camping; a pocket flashlight really comes in handing when you’re searching for your wallet in a dark bar or desperately fumbling around a port-o-potty at 2am.

For a bright light that truly is pocket-sized, check out Pak-Lites.

The tiny LED light resembles a Leggo, and snaps on top of a 9 volt battery. Pak-Lites have been used by the U.S. Air Force, the American Red Cross, and FEMA. Prices range from $10 to $30.

6. Band-Aids

Blisters hurt, particularly when you’re wearing shoes made for style and not comfort (which is why I stick to Havaianas).

But if you’re out to look good, you’ll need a band-aid or two on those toes before the night’s over.

7. Snacks

Nuts and/or dried fruit (should we call it “city mix”?) are great for a quick source of calories. Plus when your $75 entree arrives looking like something that would scare Anthony Bourdain, you’ll have something to accompany your side salad.

8. Cab and Hotel Information

It’s easy to feel excited about tackling that foreign subway system first thing in the morning, but by the end of the day (or maybe in the wee hours of the next morning) you might not feel so energetic.

Before heading out for the day, jot down the number of a cab service and the address of your hotel so you’re sure to find your way back.

"A good book and a good bag can get you through a bad situation"...Matador editor Julie Schwietert reviews the Cruising Caddy.

I’m a minimalist when it comes to stuff, but there are two things I can never get enough of: books and bags.

Other frequent travelers probably feel the same. A good book and a good bag can get you through a bad situation.

The Cruising Caddy is my latest bag, a small tote that’s ideal for filling with essentials for short walks.

Though it would be perfect to stick inside a larger bag and pull out at Immigration and Customs, all documents organized comfortably inside, I like this bag because I don’t have to store it under the bed between trips.

It’s got a dozen day-to-day uses, from a walk around the neighborhood with my dog to an afternoon rollerblading on the Hudson River.

It would also be the perfect size bag for sporting events or concerts where backpacks aren’t permitted, city tours, short hikes, and visits to the beach or pool

It comes in three colors—black, khaki, or red—and is made of microfiber and nylon. It holds up well and doesn’t get dirty easily, but you can hand wash it if needed. In addition to two exterior pouches, the Cruising Caddy also comes with a small carabiner for your keys.

My only gripe about the Cruising Caddy is its name. When I first read about it, I envisioned cruise boat tourists with cameras hanging round their necks, their Cruising Caddies strapped across one shoulder.

But once I tried the bag out, I got over it.

Price: $24.98 | BVT Products Cruising Caddy – Black

You’ve rolled up your clothes into tube-like shapes to save space and to (ironically) prevent wrinkling, only to unroll them and find unattractive creases running all over the fabric.

It’s probably time to add a simple wrinkle-free spray to your toiletry kit. With just a few spritzes of liquid sprays like the Lewis N. Clark Wrinkle Free Spray, wrinkles practically vanish (well, the liquid relaxes the fabric’s fibers) within minutes.

I usually pack a small can on my travels to maintain a clean, fresh look while on the road. And at just 3-oz per can, they pass through TSA security without incident.

The spray also reduces static and removes lint and odors. It is recommended for use on only colorfast, natural fabrics to avoid color runs.

Now you can bring those linen pants along and with the spray’s ease of use and quality of results, you may very well ditch your home iron and use it permanently.

We’ve all done it.

That last minute repacking we do at the airport security checkpoint – combing through carry-ons for every gel, gloss, liquid, and powdery substance you can find, and trying to force fit them into a free plastic bag.

Well, FlyBags are the latest in travel kits and are designed to meet TSA 3-1-1 Requirements (i.e. 3-oz bottles in clear bags, etc).

In addition to getting the nod of approval from TSA, they are actually super sturdy and excellent for organizing those grooming essentials and toiletries while traveling.

FlyBags are free of Azo dyes and pigments, making them safer for the environment, and each bag comes with three 2.5 ounce refillable bottles for your liquids, an eye mask, and earplugs.

What’s even cooler than their ultra-chic design are the color options: “blue bomb,” “pink scissors,” and “gray dagger“. How’s that for tongue-in-cheek humor?!

So, if you want to make your TSA experience a breeze or you just like collecting cool looking, travel organizing kits, the FlyBag’s for you!

Our next feel-good product discovery is Cleanup – bars of soap designed to resemble landmines.

Money raised through sales of the soap goes towards landmine removal efforts, as well as the Cambodia Landmine Museum Relief Fund.

This unique concept was developed by Hideaki Matsui as part of his senior thesis for the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

He’d been exposed to the horrors of landmines through photographs his parents shared during his youth, and thus, the idea of Cleanup was born.

The landmine design of the bars are a metaphor for the landmine removal process….”as the soap disappears, so do the landmines.”

The soap comes in two scents – Rosemary Mint and Coconut, and are made with natural ingredients.

So grab a couple bars of Cleanup and actively participate in raising awareness about landmines.
Price: $8.00 per bar (includes $2.00 Donation) | BUY

A few extra items female travelers should bring along.

You’re heading off on the trip of a lifetime. You’ve been shopping for everything you need – you’ve bought your pack, your travel clothes and your earplugs, so you’re all set.

But chicks have slightly different needs than guys. Have you packed these small essentials?

1. Pocket Knife

Victorinox-Picknicker – $34.99

An absolute essential for any traveler, especially women.

Hostel kitchens aren’t always well-stocked in the knife department, and you never want to get caught without a bottle opener.

In fact, you’ll probably win friends by being the one who can open the beer without having to use teeth. Plus the tweezers and toothpicks are highly useful for grooming.

The Victorinox Picnicker is a great choice – the blade is long enough to actually be useful, and it doesn’t have any useless extras.

2. Tissues or Toilet Paper

Sadly, not all toilets are as well-stocked as the one at your house. Toilet paper isn’t used universally, and if you’re not ready to rinse rather than wipe, having your own supply is essential.

It also comes in handy if you catch a cold or are out in the middle of nowhere when you need to go.

3. Sanitary Pack

You’re a woman so you know how important it is to have the equipment you need for that time of the month.

Prepare a zip-lock bag of pads and tampons, enough to get you through your whole period, and keep an emergency pad in your jacket pocket or daypack.

Traveling can upset your rhythm and you don’t want to get caught short.

4. Plastic Bags

It’s not exactly breaking the budget to throw five or six plastic bags into your pack, but you’ll be amazed at how useful they are.

Keep one in your daypack for rubbish, and you’ll get through the rest of them as waterproofing, or as a place to store your dirty shoes or laundry.

5. Hand Sanitizer

Women tend to be a little more concerned about hygiene than men do. A small container of hand sanitizer will take the place of soap an water after a visit to a less than salubrious public toilet, or before meals in the middle of nowhere.

6. Extra Hair/Head Ties

Don’t underestimate the value of a head tie if you have long hair. Make sure you have three or four extras in your toiletries kit in case of breakages – being able to tie back your hair is important. Plus they can double as elastic bands; use them to tie up bags and keep small items together.

7pc Manicure Set – $9.63

7. Nail Clippers

This is an item men are notorious for forgetting, and as they aren’t something you’ll use every day, many women leave them behind as well.

But it’s no fun trying to cut your toenails with your pocket knife or someone’s kitchen scissors, so chuck a set in with your toothbrush.

8. Sarong

Ah, the all-purpose garment. Being, basically, just a large rectangle of material, a sarong can be used in many ways. As a skirt, a dress, a bedspread, a scarf – the list goes on.

Lighten your load by packing a small towel (a travel towel or handtowel) for drying yourself after showers and swimming, and use your sarong as a beach blanket.

Micro fiber towels – $12.95-$32.95

9. Spray-on Deodorant

I’m sure you appreciate the value of hygiene on the road, but spray-on deodorant can also be used as form of self defense. Keep a small container in your pocket if you’re walking alone through dodgy areas, and aim for the eyes if anyone bothers you.

10. A Wedding Ring

You don’t have to actually get married, but invest in a cheap gold band and wear it on your ring finger.

Having a “husband” should deter any unwanted admirers. It might also be helpful to learn to say “I’m married” in the language of the country you’re visiting.

So, before you go, stock up on these ten essential items for female travelers – they’ll ease the way when you’re on the road.

The leaves are falling. The air is getting nippier each day.

No doubt, autumn is here.

Though the weather isn’t cold enough to pull out your heavy winter coats, the Montbell Ex Light Down Jacket is a practical alternative to your autumn fleece jackets.

Touted as the lightest down jacket on the market at just 5.7 ounces, it weighs less than a cotton t-shirt but provides the solid warmth and chill protection you get from a traditional fleece top.

It provides adequate insulation on those fall hikes or backpacking trips.

Made with 900 Fill Power Goose Down with a 7-denier Ballist Airlight ripstop nylon outshell, its design makes the Montbell jacket extremely warm, lightweight, and wind resistant.

There is a downside to this innovative jacket. Because of its ultralight design, it doesn’t work well in “high abrasion” situations such as contact with sharp objects and surfaces, as well as fire sparks.

A great buy for long term travelers who need to pack light!

Price: $159.95 | MontBell America, Inc. Extremely Light Down Jacket – Men’s

One of the simplest ways of giving back if you can’t physically volunteer your time is by occasionally donating money, clothing, and essential household items.

Better yet, you can donate everyday by shopping with companies and organizations that make an effort to donate a portion of their sales, goods, and resources to communities and individuals who need them the most.

Matador Pulse editor Julie Schwietert recently tipped me off on a piece she’d read in Delta Sky Magazine about a certain philanthropic company, TOMS and their shoes.

Intrigued, I had to find out more about their cause.

Founded in May 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, TOMS aims to provide shoes to needy children through the purchases of their shoes. To date, they’ve donated 10,000 and 50,000 pairs of shoes in Argentina and South Africa respectively.

For every pair of TOMS shoes purchased, a pair of shoes is given to a child in what they term their “One for One Movement”.

These fun, colorful shoes redefine comfortably casual. They slip on easily, come with soft leather soles and textured rubber bottoms, and are available in a myriad of patterns, textures, designs, and colors.

With creative names like Democratic Vote TOMS and Split Decision Vote TOMS, you’re sure to find at least a pair you’ll like.

They also manufacture a “Vegan Friendly” TOMS – which I assume passes on leather soles.

TOMS expands beyond shoes, selling fitted hats, t-shirts, bags, and its new fashion-forward wrap boot – an elastic wrap that extends from the ankle up to the knee with Velcro closure.

By supporting TOMS’ One for One movement, you can contribute to bringing one pair of shoes to a child in need – one of 200,000 pairs of shoes planned for donation this year.

From a few “mix and match” pieces to a convertible dress, this packing list will keep you stylish and your luggage light.

Packing for a trip is becoming a more daunting task each year, particularly for us ladies. From fluctuating airline luggage fees and weight restrictions to unpredictable climates around the world, it’s hard to know what should go and what should stay from your fabulous fashionista closet.

But don’t despair, you can still pack smart and stay stylish on the road. The first trick is to take “mix and match” items. The more your items work well together in color scheme and style, the less you’ll have to take. The second is to include pieces with “mileage” or versatility.

You should be thinking – How many ways can I wear that top?

Here are 10 items to pack to maintain your chic factor on the road:

1. Tank Top or Tees

A closet staple, tank tops help create several outfits in no time. They’re perfect for that “layered” look that is so essential for travel. A couple of black tanks and white ones are a must, as well as some in bright colors such as orange, red or blue. Whether spaghetti-strapped or tee-style, they can transition your casual day looks into night party looks.

2. Dresses

Dresses are a jet-setting lady’s best friend. They’re easy to slip on, dress up or down and frankly, save time. Jersey and satin fabrics are best, as creases disappear fast once hung in the closet. Pack an “all occasion” black jersey dress – one that works for any event from lunch to a night out. A convertible dress works even better, giving you multiple looks for multiple days! Add a couple of other dresses in solid colors for a wider selection.

BUY | Black Convertible Dress, Bamboo/Organic Cotton by Lara Miller

3. Tunics

Decades later, the tunic trend is still going strong. It’s really no surprise. Tunics are amazingly versatile pieces- they can work as a top over capris or pants, or as a dress. Some can even be lowered and worn as a skirt. Now that’s mileage! A couple tunics in solid colors is essential so you can mix and match with your bottoms. Remember to pick jersey and satin fabrics.

4. Cardigans

Three-quarter sleeve or long-sleeve cropped cardigans will protect you from that blast of cold air in-flight, dreaded air conditioning at the movies or the surprise “cool” breeze on a night out. Plus you’ll look oh-so-European-chic.

5. Black Pants

There are as many black pants as there are black dresses these days. But the key is to pick a pair that can work for all occasions. Whether a casual dinner or a night at the theater, a pair of chic, form fitting black pants can save the day. Throw on a silk or jersey tunic and you’re out the door!

6. Capris /Cropped Pants

These are flattering for most body types and work great for mixing and matching with your tops. Take along one or two pants in primary colors or throw in a denim capri piece for low maintenance mileage.

7. Black Trench Coat

It can carry you through spring, fall, and even early winter. It smartens you up in seconds and is perfect for those cool nights where a cardigan simply won’t do the trick.

8. Swimsuit

You may not be headed to the tropics, but you never know when you’ll run into an indoor heated pool, spa, or sauna. Why risk not being prepared?

9. Glorious Shoes

You need to pack three pairs of shoes: one pair of dressy flats, one pair of flip flops and one pair of heels.

Black leather flats will work with any outfit – shorts on a hot day or a black dress for a night on the town. Thong flats in particular can pull your look together fast. For cooler climates, opt for ballerinas.

A pair of solid colored flip flops are also a must – you can wear them at the beach or indoors at the hotel. They can even carry you through a day of shopping if you’re headed to a beach town. Pick a pair that’s casual without being too “beach-looking”.

To heel or not to heel? I say a pair of black heels is a must. Stilettos add spice to a night of dancing or a dinner with that hot guy you met on the road. After all, travel is supposed to be fun. Limit yourself to one pair of either black pumps or slides and stick to 3 inches or less.

10. Key Accessories

The three must-have accessories are a pair of cute affordable sunshades, a fabulous hobo bag small enough to make you look like a local yet big enough to fit your belongings and a versatile belt to add some “oomph” to your outfits.

BUY | ”Barcelona Hobo” Purse by Vitalio – Black, Brown, Red Wine or Off-White

For jewelry, stick to two pairs of fashion earrings, two bracelets and you’re good to go! If by some misfortune you’re headed toward miserably cold weather, add a black or cream three-quarter length wool coat, two to three sweaters and of course, your favorite pair of jeans.

What you decide to take on a round-the-world trip ultimately depends on the activities you plan on partaking in and the places you plan on visiting.

Packing for a long term trip around the world can be a challenge. The contents of your backpack should get you through a variety of climates, sustain you economically, be culturally sensitive, and should support a variety of physical activities without weighing you down.

Here are some items I’ve found to be indispensable during my travels.

1. Fleece and Jacket

A fleece and a wind/waterproof shell worn together or separately give you versatile options which provide protection from a variety of weather.

Jacket Price: $88.83 – $119.00 | BUY | Fleece Top Price: $39.50 | BUY

2. Bank Card

ATMs are becoming more available globally, making it easier than ever to get money in local currency while on the road. Try to have a couple cards for different bank accounts (in case one doesn’t work).

Be sure to investigate how much you will be charged by your bank for international withdrawals.

3. Rain Poncho

A compact yet sturdy rain poncho not only keeps you dry, but can also protect your day pack from moisture. It makes a useful tarp or waterproof mat for sitting on wet surfaces.

Price: $3.95 | BUY

4. Hat/Cap

A soft sun hat made from foldable fabric protects you from the sun and is easy to store. The Horizon Mosquito Cap below includes a concealable mosquito net.

Price: $29.94 | BUY

5. Flip flops

Wear them in grungy hotel showers or during tropical rainstorms when the streets are flooded. Use them as beach wear or for killing bugs. Flip flops work indoors when you are visiting countries where people remove outdoor shoes before entering homes.

Price: $12.99 | BUY

6. Sleeping Bag Liner or Sheet Sack

Even if you don’t carry a sleeping bag, bring a liner. This can be a light-weight silk sleeping bag liner or an old bed sheet, folded and sewn into a sack. Use as a blanket on cold bus rides, a layer between your body and beds of dubious cleanliness, or for its original purpose (since it is easier to clean than a sleeping bag.)

Price: $39.00 | BUY

7. Headscarf or Large Bandanna

Choose a bandanna made of sturdy lightweight material. For women, this may be necessary when visiting places like mosques, Russian Orthodox churches, and more conservative Middle Eastern countries. It also can be used as a bag (tie the corners together), a neck scarf, a way to keep hair out of your face, protection from sand and dust (wrapped around nose and mouth), a window shade (for sunny car rides), and as a halter top.

Price: $1.98 | BUY

8. Waterproof Bags

Useful for protecting important documents that you are not carrying on your person. They can also protect electronic equipment, keep small pieces of clothing dry, or keep potentially leaky items (shampoo, lotion) from getting all over your luggage.

9. Digital Camera

If you’re traveling around the world, chances are you want to document your travels. Be sure to pack extra memory, and a memory reader so you can occasionally burn photos onto CD/DVD and send an extra copy back home (or upload to online storage space such as Flickr). You can also use a digital camera to store information, such as maps, documents, and other files.

Price: $229.88 | BUY

10. Elastic Clothesline with Hooks

An elastic clothesline makes it easy to hang up and dry laundry anywhere. It is also useful for strapping or tying objects together. Some lines come with suction cups which don’t work as well so make sure you get one with hooks or loops.

Price: $9.94 | BUY

11. Small Flashlight

I carry a Maglite in my day pack because one never knows when the electricity will go out or you’ll find yourself walking down a dark, potholed street.

Editor’s Note – An alternative to flashlights are headlamps which serve the same purpose while freeing up your hands.

Price: $26.64 | BUY.

12. Day Pack

You are going to be carrying a day pack with you most of the time so make sure it has plenty of pockets (both internal and external), is strong, and provides comfortable straps. Consider getting one that can be folded up and stuffed into your regular backpack.

Price: $44.99 | BUY

13. The Keeper (for women only)

Definitely not for everyone but this little cup will minimize the amount of pads you need. Great in countries where access to tampons is a lot more difficult. It reduces the amount of trash you generate, the weight in your bag, money spent on feminine products, and emergency runs to the store.

Price: $35.00 | BUY

14. Swiss Army Knife

The Spartan model includes 2 knives, a pair of scissors, a can opener, a bottle opener, toothpick, tweezers, awl, and corkscrew – sufficient tools while traveling.

15. Money Belt

A money belt keeps cash, cards, and passports safely concealed. You may want a second storage belt such as a neck pouch to keep smaller amounts of cash for daily purchases.

Price: $11.95 – $12.00 | BUY

16. Thermal Underwear

Long thermal underwear provides much needed warmth when traveling in colder climates. I use a combination of black midweight bottoms and a midweight top. The bottoms double as comfortable leggings for lounging around, stockings underneath a skirt, and pajama bottoms. The top can be used as a sweatshirt as well.

Price: $6.80 – $23.00 | BUY

17. Sewing Supplies

Sure you can buy these anywhere but sewing supplies are good to have on hand. Make sure your pack includes needles, thread, and some dental floss. Repair heavier items (leather, backpacks) with dental floss. A needle can be used to remove splinters, as well.

18. Sarong or Travel Towel

On my round-the-world trip, I took a regular towel and deeply regret it. An absorbent, fast drying travel towel will suit your needs. A sarong has the advantage of drying quickly while doubling up as clothing.

Price: $12.50 – $33.95 | BUY

Choose quality items that will last your whole trip and don’t underestimate the importance of light-weight items. Backpacks get heavier as you travel so you will be happy that you spent a little extra upfront investing in lightweight, multipurpose gear.

When heading out on the road, some people like to take as little with them as possible.

Their reasons vary: some want to travel light, others want no reminders of their life back home.

But sometimes it’s just nice to have a nice distraction when you’re stuck in transit, or have a few hours to kill and have run out of good books.

In my case, I pack a Nintendo DS. I also make sure I bring games that are easy to get into without too much instruction.

Here’s my top 5 to pack on the road, in no particular order:

1. Crosswords DS

I’ve written about this game before, but it’s worth repeating here. Crosswords DS is perfect for long bus rides, plane and train rides, and just about any boredom inducing situation.

The crazy amount of puzzles will take you 8 years to complete. And it’s fun using the stylus to actually write the letter, and trying to beat your time and grade at the end of every puzzle.

BUY Crosswords DS

2. New Super Mario Bros.

There’s something about Mario that never goes out of style, evident in his myriad manifestations over the past 20 years.

The trend continues with New Super Mario Bros -only it takes the classic side-scrolling adventure and updates it.

Now the graphics are better (rendered in 3D) and gameplay incorporates a few surprises, including: a mini mushroom, a mega mushroom, a koopa shell suit, and more.

Luckily, the action is still paced for classic gamers like me – and keeps my mind off my fear of flying. Also includes a ton of multi-player bonus games that you can play with a friend.

BUY New Super Mario Bros.

3. Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Is it a murder mystery? Or a puzzle game? In fact, Professor Layton and the Curious Village is both.

You play the role of the Professor, who is called to a creepy English town to solve a murder. The only catch: to solve the mystery, you must solve various puzzles woven throughout the storyline.

It sounds odd, but after the first few minutes, you’ll be hooked. The puzzles can be anything from brain teasers and optical illusions, to puzzles of logic and more.

You can ponder each before you answer. Screw up, and you’ll lose points for each time you answer incorrectly.

BUY Professor Layton and the Curious Village

4. Brain Age

Do you remember your multiplication tables? Neither did I until I started training with Brain Age.

You may have heard of it already, as it was one of the top-selling games in Japan.

It’s basically a combination of brain-sharpening activities that test your mental prowess, such as high-speed multiplication, reading exercises, brain teasers, puzzles, and even a version of Sudoku.

If it sounds mildly interesting, it’s not. It’s actually a blast. Maybe it’s the curious combination of competition and the promise of a better brain that makes Brain Age so addictive.

Or maybe it’s the fact that the game is narrated by a jovial Japanese professor who cracks jokes and urges you to develop your “pre-frontal cortex.”

BUY Brain Age

5. Mario Kart DS

Easily one of the best racing games ever conceived, Mario Kart DS unveils a number of new tracks, each in glorious 3D.

You can race with all your favorite characters like Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser and yes, Princess Peach.

You start the game with access to only the first two Cups, and it’ll take some effort and skill to unlock the rest.

As an added bonus, the game includes a full roster of classic race tracks from the previous three Mario Kart additions.

Ahhh, nostalgia.

BUY Mario Kart DS

I own this jacket and I can tell you it’s the single best piece of outdoor clothing I have.

From islands to rivers, to snow capped mountains, it will keep you and anything attached to you, bone dry–yet it’s super lightweight and durable. Arc’teryx created the Men’s Beta AR Jacket for mountaineers, skiers and adventurers who want the performance of Gore-Tex Pro and top-notch durability without a laundry list of un-needed features.

The Beta AR Jacket includes polyester-reinforcements on high-abrasion areas like the shoulders and elbows to increase its lifespan. Pitzips help you stay cool when the going gets tough, and WaterTight zippers combine with the waterproof breathable material to provide moisture protection when the weather turns nasty.

What this Arc’teryx jacket doesn’t have is a million pockets, a heavy zip-in liner, fancy electronics pockets, or any other weight-adding bells and whistles you don’t want. Hold on to this one for life and it’ll be the best money you ever spent.
