We love lightweight, practical travel gadgets here at Goods, and the slick new Sansa slotRadio player joins the ranks.

This revolutionary mp3 player holds up to 1,000 songs on a tiny memory card. Its built-in FM radio allows you to tune into local stations while traveling in foreign countries as well as NPR so you’ve got instant access to the latest news. At just 1.3 oz in weight, it is super portable and barely takes up any space.

It has an integrated clip on its back that allows you to attach it to belt straps and clothing so you can take it jogging/walking.

How It Works

1,000 songs organized into various genres are preloaded onto a small chip that gets inserted into the player. I was a bit skeptical about the playlist because when it comes to music, tastes severely differ, but the slotRadio card boasts an impressive mix.

From contemporary artists such as Coldplay, Maroon 5, and No Doubt, Hip-hop artists like Akon and T-Pain, as well as Alternative and Emo Rockers such as Kaiser Chiefs and Hinder, there are at least a couple hundred songs that will satisfy your musical preferences.

Other genres include Rock, Country, and a mix of Workout and Chillout tunes. And with up to 13 hours of battery life between charges, you’re sure to be rocking out uninterrupted.

To start up the player, all you have to do is insert the slotRadio card that comes with the player and switch to PLAY.

It’s that simple.

Swapping Out Playlists

The very first question that came to mind (besides wondering if U2 made the cut) was how I would change out my playlists.

What if I got tired of continuously playing the same old…oh…1,000 songs? Additional song mix cards can be purchased online.

You can also order genre-specific music cards such as all rock tunes, if country music isn’t your style.

What’s Included

I’m a sucker for clean, attractive packaging and the slotRadio Player’s square-shaped, compartmentalized media case includes Sansa ear buds, a USB cable for connecting the player to its AC Adapter (included!), as well as a protective silicone case, a user’s guide, a 1,000 song mix card, and the player itself.

It retails for $99.99, and additional music cards can be purchased for $39.99 each from the slotRadio store. The slotRadio will also be available at Radio Shack stores, but the best part is….

We’re giving one away for free! That’s right.

From now until Friday, June 5th PST, all you need to do is tell us (in 50 words or less) about one of your favorite travel songs that reminds you of a place or reason to travel in the comments field below. We will randomly pick a winner to receive a slotRadio player after the deadline.

We will also be publishing select readers’ entries in a feature piece on Matador Nights.

    cool….
The album that reminds me of my favorite travel and travel in general is “Silk Road Stories” it’s an orchestral CD featuring Yo-Yo Ma. It’s all songs that are from Central Asia, and the silk road which is my ultimate dream destination. All of the songs evoke far off lands, past times. Plus, it’s just good relaxing music.

Can you really listen to NPR in foreign countries with this, or just in the U.S.? The former sounds like my dream come true…

I subscribe to a lot of great NPR shows via podcast and listen to them in foreign countries (well, one foreign country). Do a search in iTunes podcasts for NPR and see what you find. Even if you don’t have an mp3 player, you can listen on your computer.

I think my favourite travel song is “Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man)” by Love and Rockets- it was on a mixtape that my mom made from when I was a kid and that chugga-chugga riff all the way through totally reminds me of being on the road!

    Drink up, baby down mmm,
are you in or are you out
    leave your things behind
’cause it’s all going off without you

Right from the begging she’s urging you, practical grabbing you by the hand leading you out the door to the adventures that are passing you by the minute.

It gains the more it gives
and then it rises with the fall
    so hand me that remote
can’t you see that all that stuff’s a sideshow

Ripping that remote from your hands she pleads with you, begging you not to be distracted, to be conscious and present for your own life. Just like in life the more you give of yourself, the more your travels and experiences will give in return.

    so let go, jump in
    oh well, whatcha waiting for
    it’s alright
’cause there’s beauty in the breakdown

This song that makes me breakdown and calls me to that next great Adventure is.

    Frou Frou – Let Go

I know it’s not 50 words or less but I just couldn’t help myself when it comes to this song. :P

My friends and I rented an oceanfront beach house one weekend in beautiful Moloka’i here in Hawaii. We caught our own fish, kayaked on the glassy water, and at night made our own backyard luau! The song that takes me back to that laid-back pace is “Moloka’i Slide” by Ehukai.

My favorite travelling song is “Going up the Country” by canned heat. I love the song and it reminds me always of a loved one who passed away but loved to travel and smile. I miss him.

“Electric Feel” by MGMT is one of the most inspiring songs for me. It makes me feel as if I can be anyone I want, and that’s what travel means to me. It doesn’t matter who I am when I’m travelling, its about who I want to become and personal growth.

Fika Mai Le Pese by Zipso is one my favorite travel songs. They are a Samoan band with a great beat that brings memories of sun, heat, beaches, and good times. Check ‘em out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI5t3xlBx94

My favorite song from my travels is “Cry for you” By September. The up-beat tempo and techno mix send me right back to the crazy nights in the clubs of Europe. Great song!

Right now, my favorite travel song would have to be Iron & Wine’s version of Such Great Heights. The chorus describes how “everything looks perfect from far away.” It makes me want to experience life and not listen to anyone who tells me to climb down from my adventure.

My favorite travel song is Kaiser Chiefs “Oh My God”. The “Oh my god, I can’t believe it, I’ve never been this far away from home…” song :)

I want one of those! Sounds (no pun intended) like a really cool device, and at that price point, it seems very reasonable. Good of you to review great products like this. I probably would have never found it on my own. Tip of the cap to ya!!

“Elephant Love Medley” from Moulin Rouge. I studied abroad for 3 weeks in England and Scotland with a group of 17 students from my University. All of us girls went to see Guys and Dolls in London and Ewan McGregor played the lead role. The only movie we knew him from was Moulin Rouge so we sang songs from it the whole trip.

In college we took a road trip to Cali from Texas and the theme song was California Love by Tupac. Every morning we played it, every stop for gas we played it, everytime we got to a new city we played it. Great song for a great trip.

“The best of what’s around” by Dave Matthews Band. Turns out not where but who you’re with that really matters. I could be anywhere. This song reminds me that the journey is about the people you meet along the way.

Ramble On by Led Zeppelin would have to be one of my favourite travelling songs. Though I enjoy any Led Zep song to travel with, Ramble On was influenced by The Lord of the Rings; and, if that’s not travel, I don’t know what is.

“Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again” by Bob Dylan. This song has inspiring and beautiful story-telling lyrics that can only be told from a true traveler, which Bob Dylan was for the most part of his early life. Every traveler gains great experiences which equivalate for just as good stories. Bob Dylan is the reason I started traveling.
