According to Poynter Online,
A decade ago, we wondered whether the arrival of 2000 would shut down our electrical grids and phone systems and leave us without pagers. Now, as 2010 dawns, we look back on a decade that had more downs than ups, but at least created some cool stuff to play with.
These “cool stuff” cover the gamut of technology offerings – from GPS devices and Smartphones to High Definition TV and DVRs. Interestingly, Poynter notes that these advances in technology have “had a significant impact on the work journalists do.”
The decade’s top techno-tools, in no particular order, are:
- GPS devices
- iPod
- BlackBerry
- Digital Cameras
- HDTV
- HD cameras
- Flip camera
- DVRs
- 3G phones (The first 4G network just launched in Sweden)
- High-speed Wireless Phone Cards
- Cell-phone Apps
- Big flat-screen TVs – LED, LCD
- Slingbox
- Nintendo Wii
- Flash Drives
- eBook readers
- Noise-canceling headphones
Both Gizmodo and PasteMagazine have compiled their own similar best gadgets lists.
With all the visionary goodies this decade has produced, I’m certainly looking forward to what techno-tools the next 10 years will bring.
Did Poynter miss any gadgets? What do you think is the single most important gadget developed over the last ten years? Do tell us below.

I’m 22. I was blown away when I remembered that ONLY 5 years ago at school dances, people used disposable cameras and almost nobody had a digital camera. Now I’m surprised if I ever see them. The sad thing? They still cost $15 or 24 or so photos.

So, now that I seem to be traveling and living internationally what is the best phone to get? I’m so technologically challenged. I had a palm pilot and when that finally crashed a couple years ago I upgraded to a treo and now have the centro all with Verizon. As I’m just returning from Haiti I’m realizing I really need to get a global phone but not quite sure what to look for. Any suggestions? Thanks

It seems that everyone and his sister are into the Ifad nowadays: IPhone, IPad and IPod. It seems to me one of these will stand a good chance of winning the gadget of the decade.
